A free family event will kick off at Eildon Pondage this Saturday September 2 to mark the opening of the Victorian trout fishing season.
The 2017 Goulburn Fishing Festival, hosted by the Victorian Fisheries Authority, promises entertainment for all ages including a trade expo featuring fishing tackle, a jumping castle, face painting, balloons, food stalls and guided fishing on the Eildon Pondage with bait and tackle provided.
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Recreation and Land Operations officer Gary Fox said the event, now in its fourth year, was shaping up to be a great day for visitors to enjoy the outdoors.
“This is always a fun day out for the family which is supported by GMW, and I encourage not only locals but families from across the region to come along and see what it’s all about.
“There will also be live music, a guest appearance by Rex Hunt, a car boot sale and tours of the Snobs Creek hatchery where more than a million fish are grown each year,” he said.
On the day visitors will be able to help stock live trout, watch cooking demonstrations or chat with experts about the basics of fishing for trout, redfin and native species.
Local fisherman and Eildon Bait and Tackle proprietor Gary Constantine said fishing close to the riverbank should prove fruitful for those out and about this weekend.
“Try bait like worms, spinners and small hard bodies. There should be plenty of activity along the river, including brown and rainbow trout.
“And at Lake Eildon with the recent inflows and levels rising, cod and yellowbelly will be moving closer to the banks as they feed. They may take surface lures.”
Mr Constantine said the Goulburn River is likely to be the number one fishing spot for the opening of the trout season.
The festivities are part of the State Government’s Target One Million plan, which aims to get more people fishing, more often and increase participation to one million anglers by 2020.
The trout fishing season in Victorian rivers opens at midnight this Friday September 1.
The Goulburn Fishing Festival is a free event, and runs from 10am to 4pm on Saturday September 2. Head along to the Eildon Community Centre, 2 Centre Ave, Eildon.
The day will conclude with fireworks over the Eildon Pondage at 7pm.
