Groundwater customers in the Katunga Water Supply Protection Area (WSPA) can use their maximum licence entitlement with annual groundwater allocations being set for 2017/18.
This means groundwater licence holders may use up to 70 per cent of their licence entitlement, which is the maximum entitlement under the area’s groundwater management plan.
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) made the announcement of groundwater allocations on 14 July 2017 in accordance with the plan. Annual allocations are determined based on average groundwater use over five years.
Proposed amendments to the groundwater management plan
The Minister for Water appointed the Katunga Consultative Committee to advise on amendments to the Katunga WSPA Groundwater Management Plan. The committee has undertaken extensive consultation with groundwater users to develop a draft, amended plan which was recently submitted to the Minister for Water to consider.
The committee has proposed changes to the way allocations are determined, allowing customers to receive an allocation of 100 per cent in some years, dependent on groundwater levels.
If the Minister approves these amendments during 2017/18, the allocation will be reassessed and a revised allocation may be announced. If this occurs, customers will be advised by post and in public notices in local newspapers.
